I decided to post this in anticipation of my next recipe. Some sugar's are vegan and some are not. I choose to use the Florida Crystals sugar as this is totally vegan. And it tastes just like regular cane sugar.
It is my understanding that cane sugar is filtered though bone char which is actually burnt animal bones. Beet sugar is not filtered so if you can find beet sugar you could use that also.
I have substituted Brown Rice Syrup for sugar also with very good results.
Honey is not vegan and I choose not to consume artificial sweeteners so that is not a choice for me either.
I would never have thought about sugar as a possible non-vegan candidate. I suppose it all depends how far you take it. Love you're blog, hope you don't mind if I comment on every post!
ReplyDeleteI did not think about it either when I first started following a Vegan Diet. I actually just recently found out about it. I was reading an article and it mentioned the notion of it not being Vegan because of the bone char. I never knew sugar was filtered at all let alone though animal bones. It definitely depends on how far you want to take it. I figure an animal still had to die and was most likely abused so I just choose to use as little of the filtered sugar as possible. Will I have filtered Sugar? Most likely, but I figured I am doing the best I can and every little bit helps. Thanks for comment Gary.
